Tattoo Removal- The facts and how the laser works
That many of the most prominent cosmetic surgeons and skin care experts consider laser treatment to be the most effective method for removing all forms of tattoos speaks volumes. Many people wonder what techniques lie behind laser surgery. Firstly, the ink particles in tattoos are far too big for the human body to naturally eradicate. To solve this problem, laser surgery sends a tiny pulse of extremely powerful laser into the skin. This in turn breaks down the ink in the tattoo which is then shattered into much smaller pieces which our immune system is then able to dispose of.

How many laser treatments are required to remove an unwanted tattoo?
It depends on what you want – just a cover up or to have the tattoo removed completely. The number of treatments depends on many factors. The ink used, the colour, depth, how old it is and the number of layers of ink which have been tattooed. Most amateur and professional tattoos require 6-12 treatment sessions at monthly or bi-monthly intervals.

What are the costs likely to be?
When it comes to counting the costs, prices vary depending on the colour and size of the tattoo. This is because the overall price for removing a tattoo is worked on by how many separate treatments are necessary to remove the unwanted tattoo and this can really vary from person to person. For a better idea our specialists would have to examine your tattoo. For a rough estimate, the costs start from thirty pounds a treatment for smaller pieces yet can reach up to around three hundred for larger art works such as a half sleeve.

Do all tattoos respond to treatment?
Although laser treatment is an extremely effective method, it must be remembered that not all tattoos may respond as well. Of course the large majority of cases are fine yet some tattoos may not respond to the laser. In these cases use alternative lasers in the hope of removing the unwanted tattoo. Results can vary, especially on red and green inks which may take more treatments and a higher energy laser is used. At Epilight we have invested in the most advanced technology – brand new Harmony by Alma Lasers : award winners 2011-2012 Best Equipment Supplies.

How long does it take and does it hurt?
Ironically, getting a tattoo removed is in some ways similar to getting a tattoo in the first place. Laser treatment can cause discomfort, similar to being pinched. Although there is mild discomfort, the pain is by no means unbearable and is worth it to remove an unwanted tattoo. Most treatment sessions typically can last anywhere from five to forty five minutes. The good news is that as sessions progress, the levels of pain tends to decrease as the ink levels of the tattoo fade. Overall, the pain is minor and should not put any body off removing a tattoo should they desire to do so. At Epilight New Skin Clinic your treatment is medically managed by a health care professional.

Are there any after-effects following treatment?
Some patients ask whether there will be any unwanted after effects from having a tattoo removed. Immediately, post treatment the tattoo will look frosted or white and and the skin might swell and go a slighty red shade. However, this only lasts a couple of days and will soon pass. In other cases some laser treatment patients find that their skin may blister somewhat, this is a typical occurrence and will not lead to permanent scarring. These effects all clear on their own and do not usually require any form of additional treatment, an advice sheet dealing with all potential after effects will be provided to all patients. Although the area in question will heal naturally, it is important that the patient does not allow the treated area to receive long periods of exposure to sun light, especially without sun block. The treatment area should be kept clean and dry. In order to reduce any possibility of scarring to a minimal level, our lasers use a Q switch system. This means that the energy delivered by our lasers is at a rate of a billionth of a second. This ensures that the tattoo pigments are broken up in such a short period of time that no skin damage occurs in the process.

Will the skin be normal when the treatment is finished?
Occasionally, the patient might see changes such as to the texture or colouring of their skin. Hyper pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation may occur in some cases and this usually returns to normal in time. However in some rare cases, this could be permanent.

The energy from the lasers is absorbed by the pigments in the skin on top of the ink in the tattoo. This might result in the skin of darker patients becoming a slightly lighter shade. This process is known as depigmentation and the patient can expect to see their skin begin to revert to its typical state anywhere from between six to twelve months. Also, when treating patients of a darker skin colour we ensure that we use a specific laser in which the process of depigmentation is less likely to occur. Those patients who have a history of keloid scarring may not be suitable.

Is the laser treatment safe?
There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that the treatment can lead to skin disorders or an increased risk of cancer.

Why is the new advanced high power laser better?
With a considerably stronger power available than most other medical laser equipment, our new high powered Q switch is able to deliver double the quantity of energy by using multiple pulses.

Unlike other devices that are single pulse, it is able to achieve higher peak power with a maximum spot size. Providing deep penetration for fast, safe and efficient tattoo removal.
